Dive into summer with NC Aquarium’s camps

Participants enjoy some activities offered during the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island's Jr. Aquatic Adventures summer camp. This year's camp, which is open to ages 8-10, is June 18-22 and Aug. 13-17. 


Summer Camps at the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island are a great and exciting mix of fun, education and activities, and registration is now open.

From Jr. Aquarist to historic explorers to dinosaurs, this summer’s camps are full of adventure for all ages. Sign up soon, since all camps are limited to 12 campers, and remember: Aquarium members get 10 percent off.

Jr. Aquatic Adventures

When: June 18-22 and Aug. 13-17

Ages: 8-10

Details: Dive into science and fun while exploring nature on the Outer Banks. Jump in the waves, explore the salt marsh, and take a snorkeling adventure. Meet aquarium animals up close, cast a line and make new friends. Wrap up the week with Beach Olympics.

Cost: $225

Aquatic Adventures

When: July 9-13

Ages: 11-14

Details: Young scientists explore dynamic ecosystems, collect and release animals, wade into the salt marsh, and hike through the maritime forest. Learn new water skills like snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up-paddleboarding (SUP) and even try and catch a wave with a surfing lesson.

Cost: $240

Fisherman’s Camp

When: July 30-Aug. 3

Ages: 10-14

Details: Brush off your fishing rods, waders and cast nets. Go on fishing outings, identify your catch, and visit a local fish-packing house. Learn how watermen fish while working to preserve sea turtle populations. From catching to conservation, see a waterman’s side of fishing.

Cost: $250

Aquarist Camp

When: June 25-29 and July 23-27

Ages: 11-14

Details: Do hands-on work behind the scenes just like our Animal Caretakers. Feed the fish in the Aquarium’s shark pool, prepare veggies for box turtles and design treats for river otters, then go on a collecting trip and bring back juvenile fish, invertebrates, or comb jellies.

Sea Turtle “Hatchling” Camp

When: July 16-20 and Aug. 6-10

Ages: 7-10

Details: Get an up-close look at all things turtles. Meet and prepare treats for turtles in the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation Center. Participate in the steps from stranding to rehab to release. Cap it all off with a beach clean-up to reduce threats to turtles, and create turtle art out of trash.

Diggin’ Dinosaurs

When: June 11-15 and July 2-6

Ages: Incoming 1st, 2nd Graders

Details: Hang out with the dinosaurs that will be returning to the Aquarium this summer journey into prehistory. Experience these magnificent creatures and their ancient environment with activities and crafts. Then meet some of our very own living “dinosaurs.”

Cost: $175

Roanoke Island Explorers: Croatan Treasures

When: July 23-27

Ages: Incoming 1st, 2nd Grades

Details: Follow in the footsteps of the Roanoke Island explorers that came before us. Visit the Elizabeth II, Fort Raleigh, and other Lost Colony sites to see where explorers to the island lived and adventured. Build your own tools, go on a scavenger hunt, and get crafty with nature’s resources.
