If the sand and sun are too hot to handle, or if you just want to explore the waters like the Outer Banks' early Native American tribes, kayak rentals — as well as guided kayak tours — are a call or click away. Many equipment rental companies offer kayak delivery.

There are plenty of great spots to explore by water, including Kitty Hawk Woods Maritime Forest Preserve, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, the busy waterfront of historic Manteo or any of the five different sounds separate the Outer Banks from the mainland — Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, Roanoke Sound, Croatan Sound and Pamlico Sound — and the Atlantic Ocean. Jennette's Pier in Nags Head is a popular launch site for experienced ocean kayakers.

Following is a sampling of the area businesses that can help get you out on the water:

  2. Coastal Kayak Touring Company
  3. Duck Village Outfitters
