Muffins and Scones, which is located in the heart of Avon on Hatteras Island, is a great place to stop for morning java and a fresh-baked muffin — or scone, bagel, pie, sandwich and more — while enjoying the weather, water and scenery of Hatteras Island. It’s easy to spot: Just look for the vibrant purple building with the white roof.

Like its sister store in Avon — Cups and Cones ice cream parlor — quality at Muffins and Scones is priority No. 1. Everything on its menu is fresh-baked, homemade and designed to make mouths water, such as their butterscotch pecan scone, special key lime pie, strawberry pie rimmed with fresh whipped cream, buttery and flaky croissants, and classic French macaroons. They also serve more than 15 varieties of authentic New York-style bagels and fresh cream cheese, fresh-squeezed OJ, and some of the best specialty coffee drinks, such as butter beer coffee, and espresso on the Outer Banks.

For those in the mood for something a bit more substantial, try one of their homemade breakfast sandwiches, soups, grilled Paninis or light dinner fare. There’s plenty of cozy seating — and the friendly customer service makes it that much better.
