From fabulous fall fishing to inspiring seaside sunrises, visitors can delight in all aspects of ocean and beach life this time of year at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head

We encourage folks to come out to try their luck fishing, walk the pier to sightsee, or just soak in sunshine while relaxing on one of our comfortable benches.

Fishermen catch plenty of red drum, black drum, and speckled trout in November and December, so don’t be surprised to see some fish coming over the rail.

These weeks leading up to the holidays offer a wonderful time to slow down, smell the salt air and watch migratory waterfowl zip across the horizon.

Our 1,000-foot long pier offers an exceptional place to check out what’s flying south this fall. These birds can include surf scoters, Canada geese, and a wide variety of ducks — ruddy, grebes, eider, harlequin, buffleheads, merganser, and red-throated loons.

Be sure to bring telephoto lenses, spotting scopes and binoculars, so you can get a better look at what’s flying over the sea.

In addition, take time to check out our new CoastSnap exhibit where visitors use smartphones to take a photo of the beach profile from a stationary metal cradle on the north side. This citizen science project helps record changes to the beach.

“CoastSnap is a network of simple camera mounts at beaches that invite the public to take a photo and upload it to social media, using a specific hashtag,” says Dr. Mitchell Harley, a professor at UNSW in Sydney, Australia.

Hillary Manning of Raleigh did a quick picture while she was fishing on Jennette’s recently and loved the idea of contributing to science. Just post on social media, #CoastSnapJennettes.

While you’re here, you also should visit the Pier Shop. Inside this newly renovated beach shop, there are hats, T-shirts, flip flops, and a colorful children’s area.

Shop for everything from ocean-inspired jewelry to Shark watches to time-tested tackle such as double bottom rigs and Got-Cha plugs. There are great gifts galore, too.

Open every day of the year, except Christmas, Jennette’s Pier offers a fun, refreshing place to enjoy the sun and have some fun. Special Thanksgiving Day hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
