Searchers found the body of a man who drowned after going for a Labor Day swim from a pontoon boat in the Currituck Sound.

Sundara Baskar Pooraswamy-Chinna, 34, was found using a side-scan radar in about 8 feet of water at at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from Sgt. John Beardsley, an enforcement officer with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

Pooraswamy-Chinna man jumped from a rented pontoon boat just off the Duck shoreline about 12:30 p.m. Monday to go swimming. He was vacationing with friends from his job in New Jersey. After some time, the boat drifted away from him in the stiff wind. His friends threw him a life preserver when he began struggling in the water, Beardsley said. He disappeared beneath the surface before reaching the life preserver.

North Carolina Wildlife Resources, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and several other agencies aided in the search.
