The annual Dare County Special Olympics BBQ fundraiser, originally scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6, has been postponed.

A date has not yet been set, but in a Facebook post, event organizers said the event "will most likely take place in the Fall or Winter when cleanup is complete and things are quieter on the OBX."

All purchased tickets will be honored at the rescheduled date. Raffle items will be safely stored and raffled at the rescheduled date.

Proceeds from the annual fundraiser ensure that all Dare County Special Olympics participants are equipped with the proper uniforms, able to train and compete and have travel expenses covered to state games, swim meets and enjoy outings, such as horseback riding.

The Dare County Special Olympics serves more than 76 school-age children, as well as adults.

In 2016, the barbecue fundraiser raised $10,000, and private donations nearly totaled the amount raised.

Editor's Note: Other scheduled events on the Outer Banks may also be cancelled or postponed due to Hurricane Dorian. Please contact the venue, or check an event's Facebook page, for weather-related changes to scheduled events.
