The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ocracoke Express recently began shuttling visitors between Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. The new passenger-only ferry makes three round trips daily through Sept. 5. Departures are from the Hatteras Terminal at 9 a.m., 1 p.m, and 5 p.m. Departures from the Ocracoke Silver Lake Terminal are at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m.. The one-way ferry trip takes approximately 70 minutes. The fee is $1 each way. There is no extra charge for bicycles.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation recommends that passengers arrive at the Hatteras terminal at least 20 minutes before departure time. At first, passenger ferry reservations will not be needed. A reservation system will be put in place at a later date.
