The Christmas Mouse fire

A fire engulfs the Christmas Mouse store on U.S. 158 in Nags Head, N.C. on Friday, April 12, 2019.

A fire engulfed the Christmas Mouse store on U.S. 158 on Friday.

The fire appears to have started in the back of the building around 2 p.m. Firefighters arrived 10 minutes later and got it under control.

Beth Saunders, an employee, said a man came in and told her the back of the building was ablaze so she rushed out. Another employee was just arriving to work.

The store is one of eight spread across Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, according to its website.

The original Christmas Mouse location in Williamsburg got off the ground in 1985, and the one in Nags Head on Mile Post 10 opened two years later, according to the store's website.

It sells Christmas ornaments and decorations in an 8,000-square-foot space — the largest store of its kind on the island, according to the site.
