KITTY HAWK, N.C.
An 81-year-old man has been charged in connection with an accident that killed two pedestrians Monday along N.C. 12.
David Archer, 81, of Kill Devil Hills, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and driving left of center, said Kitty Hawk Police Chief Joel Johnson in a news release.
An investigation determined the driver in the crash either fell asleep at the wheel or had a medical incident, Johnson said.
"Alcohol was not a factor and it was not intentional nor was there any malice," Johnson said.
Killed Monday afternoon were Hanover County school teacher Holly Nicolette, 40, and her husband Alan, 37.
They were walking along N.C. 12 with a group of six people when they were struck by a pickup truck. A child was injured, but was treated and released from a hospital.
