An elementary school teacher died Thursday at school after falling ill during a fire drill.

Kim Hunter Daugherty, a fifth-grade teacher,  died from an undisclosed medical emergency about 10:30 a.m. with a school nurse in attendance, said James Bunch, assistant superintendent of Perquimans County Schools. She had been a teacher for 20 years.

“She was a great teacher, a great colleague and she was loved,” Bunch said.

Classes at Hertford Grammar School were cancelled at 1 p.m.

Daugherty said she was not feeling well as she returned to class following a fire drill and died shortly afterward, Bunch said. He was not aware of her having a serious health concern before Thursday.

Counselors and ministers were made available to staff and students, a service which will continue in coming days.

Daugherty is the daughter of Hall of Fame pitcher Jim “Catfish” Hunter.
