A 53-year-old Ohio man died Monday while swimming in the ocean north of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

A family member brought the man to shore about noon where bystanders unsuccessfully tried to revive him, according to a release from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The man was not using a flotation device. There was a high risk of rip currents in the area. This is the first water-related fatality in the park this year.

“Our staff offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends,” said Dave Hallac, superintendent of the National Parks of Eastern North Carolina. “We urge all visitors to be very careful when swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.”
