Power is out for all of Hatteras Island and Ocracoke as of early Saturday morning.
The cause was coming from Dominion Energy which provides power from north of Oregon Inlet, according to a Facebook post from the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative.
Later, Dominion Energy cleared their lines to the Oregon Inlet substation. Crews of the cooperative testing the transmission line south of substation by around 9 a.m., an update on the post said.
Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative is a member owned non-profit electric distribution cooperative that serves 7,600 customers on Hatteras Island. Tideland Electric Membership Corporation serves about 1,400 customers on Ocracoke, according to a website showing the effects of the outage.
The outage is reminiscent of two years ago, when power was cut to Hatteras and Ocracoke when workers on a new bridge over Oregon Inlet accidentally severed the electric line leading to island. The power was out for eight days and forced an evacuation of tourists.
The week of July 4th is one of the busiest of the season for the Outer Banks.
