HATTERAS VILLAGE, N.C.
Reservations to take a passenger ferry to Ocracoke are available after more than 1,000 people rode across on the fast moving vessel in three days.
The Ocracoke Express began service Monday with free rides the first two days. Tickets are now $2 round trip. Reservations can be made through June 15 online at ncferry.org or by calling 1-800-293-3779, according to a news release from the North Carolina Ferry Division. There is no extra charge for bicycles.
The ferry with a capacity of 149 people will make three round trips daily through the summer, departing from the Hatteras terminal at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., and departing the Ocracoke Silver Lake Terminal at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. A one-way trip takes approximately 70 minutes.
Free trams are available in Ocracoke for rides through the village.
Planning for a passenger ferry began years ago as an answer to long lines waiting to catch a vehicle ferry. The trip lengthened from about 35 minutes to an hour after the shorter route became too shallow from shoaling sand.
