KNOTTS ISLAND, N.C.

A small private airplane crashed in a Knotts Island marsh Saturday evening.

The pilot, who was not identified, got out of the plane uninjured and rescuers helped him to dry land using a ladder, Ralph Melton, chief of the Currituck Fire and EMS, said in a release.

The plane experienced mechanical trouble after taking off from Suffolk Executive Airport about 35 miles from Knotts Island by air. The Cessna was found flipped over after it crashed into the marsh about 5 p.m. Saturday off Knight’s Point.

The crash is under investigation.
