As the sun sets on a hot day, a large thunderstorm makes its way over downtown Norfolk on July 14, 2017.

With temperatures rising today into the lower 80s, and plenty of humid air in place, a cold front could spawn late afternoon and evening thunderstorms for the region.

The chance of overnight rain is about 80 percent, according to the National Weather Service's morning briefing.

During thunderstorms, the chances of strong, gusty winds increases, and localized heavy downpours are possible. There is a slight chance on small hail in some of these storms.

The weather service is forecasting approximately a half inch of rain throughout the area, with more in areas that experience the strongest storms. Such downpours could produce some localized minor flooding.
