ELIZABETH CITY, N.C.

A 16-year-old student athlete died Monday after the car he was driving crashed into a tree north of Elizabeth City.

Logan Wayne Grubb of Elizabeth City was driving west on Berea Church Road in a Dodge pickup truck when he ran off the right side of the road, said Trooper A.T. Miller of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

He overcorrected into the oncoming lane and then swerved again right before running off the road and hitting a tree, Miller said.

He was the only occupant of the truck and no other vehicle was involved. Grubb’s traveling speed is still under investigation, Miller said. The weather was clear and Grubb was wearing a seat belt.

Grubb played basketball and football at Pasquotank County High School, according to his obituary.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Towne South Church of Christ.
