Free weekly yoga classes on the beach

Connect with Mother Earth and reach for the sunny skies during free beach yoga sessions every Thursday at 8 a.m. this summer at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head.
Join instructor Amy Klauser for an hour-long yoga gathering where both visitors and residents get grounded and start their days with this healthy activity in a soothing environment, the oceanfront.
“Your senses come alive,” she said. “There’s a cool breeze on your skin, and you can hear the wildlife and birds.”
The brainchild of Brittany Raffa, outreach coordinator for the Outer Banks Hospital, July classes have been well-attended and fun. This is the first time the pier and hospital have partnered for yoga.
“Amy is a great instructor, and these classes are designed for men and women of all ages and skill levels,” Raffa said. “Namaste at the beach helps people get their morning started right!”
In the opening minutes, Klauser asks her students to get comfortable sitting on their towels or mats before clearing their minds and finding their centers. As noisy thoughts dissipate, soothing sounds of waves breaking on the wet sand fill the void.
“I think they’re going great, for sure,” Klauser said. “The weather has been good with ocean breezes.”
After this moment of meditation, she instructs participants through easy-to-follow steps. The stretches and poses seem to melt away participants’ tension and stress. All is silent except for the surrounding ocean sounds.
35 people attended her last beach class at Jennette’s. It was a super-hot morning and she said perhaps future sessions might be held in the shade created by the pier house and ramps.
“Turnout has been incredible and people are pleased,” Klauser said. “I’ve gotten good feedback!”
Raffa noted that due to the popularity, classes will continue into August. Guests are encouraged to bring their water bottles and large towels or mats.
Klauser has been teaching yoga for 16 years, including other styles, like on top of standup paddleboards. So wake up a little earlier, head to Jennette’s Pier and let Klauser lead you through this mind and body exploration. “You leave feeling invigorated, feeling lighter,” she noted.
